Hi I am interested in saw palmetto and or Metformin to control the side effects of PCOS and found your post. I too reacted badly to fertility tretment OHSS due to PCOS. I wondered whether you had any furhter info about whether it is safe to take either or.
yours gratefully
Kate
Kate, you need to ask your doctor whether it's safe - no-one here can assure you either way.My TV is broken!

I used to have PCOS and I followed a diet that I paid alot of money for about 10 years ago and I had to eat "burns" every 10-15mins which was chopped/cubed swede, parnsip, carrot etc....it didnt work! I was told to eat high protein and reduce fats.
If you ask your consultant/GP or nurse, they should have a diet they could recomend.
Diagnosis for PCOS is usually done via an untrasound scan which clearly shows cysts on the ovary.

I wa diagnosed with pcos when i was 16 and I have never been treated I really want to try metformin. I have been told i will have to be re-refered to consultant as a gp can not perscribe it? Has anyone else had the same thing?
I hope you don't mind me asking this on your thread fsdss. In Perfect love and Perfect Trust.0 -

Yes, you do need to get your metformin prescribed by your consultant, but any repeat prescriptions can be given by your gp.
This was the case for me when I used to take it.Murphy's No More Pies Club member # 140 - lost 40 lbs

no problem......no need to ask really...you are very polite!!
i cant use metformin anymore as it gives me depression 7 - 10 day before my period. i have started weightwatchers and have currently lost 1st 4lb!! through sensible eating reducing wheat based products, filling up on extra veg etc (been on diet since january!!)
weightwatchers didn't suit me before because of the medication i was on i think - but now i seem to be doing well.
since last year, my periods have been regular - on a 28day cyle, the first time in my life i have had an inkling of when it will appear!!! and Dr reckons that i am therefore ovulating, however, no pregnancy - not that i am trying - but it wouldn't be the end of the world!! i'm just relaxed about it all, taking nothing and enjoying my life with or without symptoms of pcos.
i'm hoping with another stone off then side effects of excess hair, spots etc will just shrink my "muzzy" definately needs less wax on now already!!;)Give blood - its free0 -
That's good news about your cycle regulating fsdss
I think that out of all the pcos symptoms I do suffer from, irregular cycle has never been an issue for me. I have always been regular 28 days, but I definately do not always ovulate, as has been tested quite a few times, even when taking clomid:rolleyes: however I do feel blessed as I do have a son, who's a miracle really, he is almost 16 and I have never been able to get pregnant since!
Well done on the weight loss too :T It's horribly unfair, but it seems so much harder to lose weight with pcos, it's a constant battle!!Murphy's No More Pies Club member # 140 - lost 40 lbs

I have PCOS
I have just lost over 3 stone on the Cqambridge diet and have now swapped over to Atkins
I would reccomend Atkins over CambridgeMad Mum to 3 wonderful children, 2 foster kittens and 2 big fat cats that never made it to a new home!
Aiming to loose 56 pounds this year. Total to date 44.5 pounds 12.5 to go. Slimming World Rocks!0 -
hello
it is so nice to know i am not the only person in the world with this.
i was diganoised when i was 17 after having my son when i was 16 then no period after that.
i found weightwatchers helped me lose about 8 pounds but with a not very supportive bf i struggled to cook 3 seperate meals and he wouldn't eat weightwatchers grrrr.
i buy angus castus in my local health shop for 7 pounds for 30 pills and i take one a day with saint jons wart, multi vitimins and vitimin b o and folic acid as they say to take that if you are trying to concieve.
my consultant will not give me any tablets as i am only young he says i have all the years in the world i may but my partner doesn't.
i found when i take these vitimins i am not hungery but again i forget to and that is were i slip grrr silly goldfish for a brain.
i think what i find so frustrating is that i would like another child and i no my first is a angel and a blessing but i get so annoyed when all my friends get pregnant and moan about how they dont want to be pregnant and they are also angels in the form of offering to carry a child for me but i struggle with that consept too.
o and i havent had a period since August last year and i must spend half of the month crying about not having a period.
o and that annoys me that all my friends moan about having periods while i wish for a period.
but thank you everyone for replying i will try again
and rant over. x0 -
Hi all, has anyone tried spiro? I'm losing bloat - my arms and face aren't as puffy. My GP won't let me have metformin at the same time though, and I really want it back again, stopped taking it 4 years ago and wish I hadn't lol!52% tight0
