PC died

My pc froze up after windows defender notified me of a file that might be a problem.

I had to restart the pc but since then, nothing happens after the bios boot up just a black screen.

I have to reset the pc then can start up in safe mode - have run windows defender in safe mode and a system restore - but still the same - I only get a blank screen after a reboot, can only get a start up into safe mode.

Any ideas?:confused::confused:

    Sounds like drivers or a system file damaged. Safe mode removes everything but basics from the install so if you cannot boot in anything but safe mode I would guess a faulty driver is the issue.

    yep could be, but even after a system restore no joy.

    Just getting my rescue disk out to see if that can do anything........

    Can you access msconfig is safe mode? It may help you regain access to a normal boot up if you disable all but basic windows services from running at bootup. Is this XP ???

  • if you have XP disc do a repair install.
    it wipes all drivers, resets registry etc, will sort your problem.

    @AGB863

    Did you note down (or can you remember) which file caused the problems in the first place?

    sorry no

    pc still dead

    still trying to run recovery console from XP disk but it has been crashing.
    It ran once then asked for admin password - so, after being on the microsoft web site, i reset the registry setting to stop asking for the password, but it is still not working.

    Looks like i have sorted it.

    I run some software called "Fix It Utilities" and unlike xp when in safe mode, using this software you can do a complete system restore whilst in safe mode. I also ran a registry fixer, which is part of the same software, which repairs and / or deletes broken links and hey presto all is functioning ok now.

    Should have gone down this route 5 hours ago instead of following microsofts ideas.

    Thanks to everyone for the suggestions:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
