Nikon D80- and self portrait poblems

Hi,
I have tried to take photos of myself and my daughter using my Nikon D80 DSLR's self timer but because the camera sets the focus when the timer is set, if I am not in the postion that I wish the photo to be taken then either the focus will not set as there is nothing to focus on or the picture is blurred where I have joined the scene.
I have thought about a remote control but guess this will not set the focus as it probably cannot be depressed halfway down, any ideas? There must be a simple solution!
Thanks

based on a completely different camera but I would expect.
You should be able to set the camera to manual focus.
There may be a menu option to stop autofocus on timer.
Press the shutter halfway, note the Fstop and shutter speed.
Stick it in full manual mode and take the pic on timer.

changing the f no. will change the depth of field and that could be one solution. OR set it to manual focus or as you say buy a remote - they're relatively cheap.0

Thanks, I am going to get the remote as they are cheap enough and I will use it anyway and experiment with manual focus and f nos. Thanks for your help

Hi
You have to set the manual focus; buying a remote won't change this issue if you don't set it to manual focus.
I have a D80 right in front of me and just used it on self timer with manual focus and it worked.
The button is on the side opposite the shutter button, a little switch labelled AF or M - turn it to M and set the focus.

Thanks Zazan999 and all that suggested manual focus, can't believe I didn't think of that!
