Paypal needs bank account details yes/no?

My brother needs to pay for something using his credit card but the vendor only accepts Paypal. Little bro says that Paypal wants his bank details. He doesn't want to give these because he's overdrawn.

I thought you could just use your credit (or debit) card to pay via Paypal, without giving any bank details.

Anyone know how it really works? Does Paypal insist on having bank details for a "Personal Account" signup?

  • You have to give your bank account details, but can use credit cards as the payment method.

hi ya,The reason they want it is it also helps them to keep nasty peps at bay, by having registered bank account and every now and again if you go over the earning thresh hold/Selling (i think thats for tax purposes) of it think its £2.500-£3000 they want you to re enter that you are not a seller and your just ebaying for personal useand reenter you account details again ,Also a couple cannot use the same banking details on file , but, as to if you are overdrawn or by how much its not used for that....HTH
Don't sweat the small stuff, Its all small stuff.
  • Giving your bank details is also a way of verifying your account. They usually deposit small amounts in and you confirm it, it also then confirms your address, which means your covered by items being sent to your address.

From a sellers point of view its more reassuring when you see that the buyers address is vertified.

But with saying that, just because you give your bank details, doesn't mean you have to pay this way. You can change your payment method as soon as you go to pay for an item.

For me at the minute it will come up with the option to pay for things with my paypal balance, if i didn't want to use that, id just click 'more funding options' and choose what i wanted.

So you are certain that he can't simply pay via Paypal using his credit card without giving bank details?

Other people are telling me that he can. :-?

(This has nothing to do with eBay, by the way).
  • Nope, you have to enter your bank details. It doesn't matter how much you have or don't have in your account, you don't have to pay through your bank account, I usually use CC for extra protection.
