Paying off store card with credit card?

hi all,

this may sound like a stupid question but here goes:

GF and I brought a bathroom suite from B&Q in the sales just after Christmas. It was 0% for 3 months so we are waiting to settle on the next statement. Current balance is about £600.
What I would like to do is apply for a 0% purchase credit card in my name and pay off the B&Q card with that. Would this be counted as a purchase and therefore eligible for 0%, or would it not?
I know we could go for a balance transfer instead, but the B&Q card is in her name and I want to put the credit card in my name -- don’t trust her not to spend on it ;)

Any advice is much appreciated :D

No, it would count as a balance transfer.

does this mean if i get a card with 0% balance transfer it will work even though the cards will be in different names?

Is the store card a proper CC i.e. with a 16 digit number ... if it isn't then you probably can't do a BT.

However, if you can do a BT, the cards being in different names won't matter

Personally, I would get the 0% credit card for purchases - put everything I purchase onto that card, i.e. food, petrol, anything you would use cash for, then with the cash that I haven't used to buy food, petrol etc. pay off the B & Q card.
  • good thought there miaxmia.

what i am looking to do though is, MFI have a sale on at the moment which ends on 2nd April. The items we need from them come to about £700 which i want to pay for using the money we got to pay off b&q. the 2nd arpil deadline with MFI doesn't give me enough time to get a 0% CC for that purchase. i'm just trying to figure out options to get 0% somewhere on either b&q or mfi

Word of warning on mixing your balance transfer and ongoing 0% purchases - standard advice is to have two separate cards.

With only a week to go, you'd be cutting it very tight. Your best bet would probably be a Virgin Money card, 0% on BT for 15 months, (not purchases!, only 3 month on purchases), 2.98% fee. It has a SBT facility and can transfer money directly into your current account. You can then spend it with either B&Q or MFI.

On the B&Q card it sounds like you've going to have to raid the piggy bank to clear this before the interest kicks in, can't see any way that you'll have enough time to complete a balance transfer and make the payment if it's due up end of this month.

I agree with Cannyjock - you shouldn't mix a balance transfer with 0% on purchases, but I would avoid the balance transfer card because of the fee - time is tight, but is your MFI purchase an item to be ordered, in which case you will only have to pay a deposit by the 2nd April and then presumably pay the remainder when item ready for collection, which would give you a bit more time to get that 0% on purchases card.
