Loud Reving sound from pc tower
Comments

I sometimes use a cotton bud to gently rub excess dust build up from fans. Has worked for me with slightly excessive noise. Loud reving may be a different story. If you are tackling it yourself consider observing the fan rotating now and after you have cleaned it ... no more noise could be that the fan has stopped completely!!!0

luckily though modern cpu's have an automatic cut out so that if the fan has stopped, the cpu will shut down and pc switch off. in the old days the cpu would melt if it overheated!
lady k - i wouldnt be in any hurry, clean it sometime in the week when you've got the compressed air can. if the cpu fan is faulty - its a cheap replacement so you should be alright. if you need any help identifying which one you need just ask.0 -
Took the side off (wrong flippin side at first) and it seems like its coming from the small fan comin off what prob is the motherboard. It doesnt look massively dusty although there is a cover of it everywhere.
I want to get it done now but dont have the stuff
If it's a small fan it sounds like it might be the northbridge cooler?
Not too big a job to fix if it is. The same thing happened to my PC and I replaced it with a passive cooler (i.e. one without a fan) which cost me about a fiver. I've not had any issues with performance or (obviously) noise since then.
I've even read about people simply removing the fan and not replacing it with anything, and they've not had any problems. That might be a bit of a gamble, though.0 -
I did vacumm it carefully and ended up unscrewing the front of the fan off and cleaning it with cotton buds and the vacumm but it still doesn't sound right it just sounds like its starting up but doesnt get to the quieter bit like computers do. I didnt have the compressed air so did what I could for now without that but I did get a lot off so I'm not sure it would make much difference anyway.
It does look quite small, smaller than I expected it to be, about 3 inches square. I didnt get the name of it though before putting the side back on I should have done that.
I hope it isnt anything else other than the fan thoughThanx

A 3" square fan is almost certainly the processor cooler. Replacing it isn't a big job, but does require a little care. NOT having a cooler isn't an option with the processor!
It's highly unlikely to be anything other than a fan.0 -
Thanx when I get out to the shops I'll get some of the compressed air and a comp vacumme anyway as it will be useful to have in the future. I know the cmos thing has gone aswell as if I ever turn off at the plug for even a short time it comes up cmos warning and the date changes so I'll maybe look at replacing that aswell although theres no problem unless I turn it off by mains but if I'm in there anyway I may aswell change it.Thanx
