Correct/best file format for burning to DVD

I'm trying to figure out how to burn a home video stored on Mini-DV, onto DVD for use in a home DVD player.
I can't seem to find anywhere that tells me the correct/best format to save the file prior to burning it onto a blank DVD.
I am using the editing program that came with the camcorder (Panasonic), called MotionDV Studio.
By default it seems to save files as .avi, but is this the correct/best format for transfer to DVD?
Any help much appreciated!

DVD Players only read .VOB files, which is the format that the movie needs to be in for the DVD player to read/play the DVD.
The easiest way to do this, is to get software called Nero Burning Rom, which will ask you to show it where the movie you want converted to DVD is, and it will do all the rest on its own.
I take it you don't have Nero Burning Rom, so another way is to go to https://www.media-convert.com and convert the movie to DVD Format (.VOB). (The site is easy to use and tells you what formats are used by what device).
Once you've converted the files to .VOB, you need to burn them to a dvd rw disk.
Good Luck.

For a freeware solution have a look at DVD Flick. It will take an AVI as input and create a DVD you can wtach on a standalone DVD player. It's very simple to use and works very well. DVD Flick will burn it for you as well. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
The discs need to be authored properly to be readable in *most* (nearly all) players.
You can't just plonk a few vobs on a dvdr and hope for the best.
Be careful to choose PAL as well, don't convert your (i'm assuming here) PAL footage to NTSC.
Be ready for it to take a while to convert from your DV-avis to MPEG2.They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -

It doesnt matter which format it is saved in before transfer to DVD. AVI. Is usually best as it is more compressed and uses less room on the hard drive. The edititng software (MotionDV Studio) will do the neccesary recoding and transfer to DVD0
