fairtrade products- a real deal, or ripoff?

is there any proof that the various growers of x/y/z foodstuffs get paid more, when you buy a fairtrade branded product?
or are the supermarkets just conning people into paying more for 'ethical' peace of mind..? (assumes same product quality, shops keep same price margains, so no loss to them),,
