Car Insurance at Different Address?

Simple question:

When taking out insurance can I give my mum's address as my home address even though my car is registered to my actual address?

Basically she lives in a nicer area, ie. cheaper premium.

Yes, assuming you are willing to commit fraud.

    ....So no, not legally.

If you keep the car at your mum's house, then sure. If it's kept at your house, don't be silly.

Of course, you could spend less money on your policy by lying, but it will cost you if you ever need to claim.

Maybe you should have built a garage instead of a conservatory ;)

Didn't realise that its 'lying', I've never been told by an insurance company that the car has to be insured at the same address as the V5.

I do the same thing, but I do actually keep my car at my mums house due to work commitments. I phoned my insurers and explained this to them, and they were fine with it! But like somebody else has said, it is fraud if you are lying!!

The car has to be insured at the address it is kept at. This can be different to the V5 address. The V5 only shows the address of the registrant.

You know full well that it's lying. You gave it away in your first post:

"Basically she lives in a nicer area, ie. cheaper premium."

You intended to lie to the insurer by misrepresenting the risk, thereby lowering your premium.

When I was at college someone did this - car insured at her parents in Aberdeen, we were in Luton. She had an accident, insurance found out she was living in Luton and car was with her all the time. Material fact not revealed - insurance withdrawn and no payout.

What did you think is was then? They ask for your address so you give them your Mums address.....wheres the truth in that? None, so its a lie. Simple.

Daveyjp's student example is an interesting one.

My cars were always registered at my parent's address when I was a student, even though I spent 7 months of each year living elsewhere.

I can't believe that insurers actually expect you to change your address every time you go home for vacations and every time you go back to university. That would be ridiculously onerous.

I'd be interested to hear if someone's got an insurer to merely note the term-time address on the policy (whilst leaving the home address as the main address), as that's surely the more sensible way to do it.

I had an accident (and claimed) whilst at university too, and it wasn't a problem at the time.
