Trying to reset admin password on my macbook pro.
long story but I sold the laptop on Ebay, got scammed (Paypal of course aided all this buy finding in favour of buyer). Buyer claimed laptop wouldn't work, I got it back and discovered the logic board was damaged / replaced. Anyway, got a new logic board in (managed to get in done under it's old warranty from when I bought it) and am now trying to clear the user name this person set up.
Lots of stuff says about inserting disc, holding C, but this still prompts for the current admin password. Tried restarting it in single user mode and that is just baffling and none of the prompts seem to work.
any ideas?

I would do a complete erase/install from the MacOS disks. You'll lose everything on the disk but if that isn't a problem it is the best way forward.

how do i go about a complete erase / reinstall?
I take it that is just basically wiping everything off the laptop, then using the disks to reinstall everything
