Cleaning Storage Heaters

I have storage heaters in my house and was planning on cleaning them when the weather gets warmer as they've been there for a few years now and I want to make sure they're working to maximum efficiency.

How would I go about this though? I was going to take the covers off and hoover any dust in there out, is this a wise idea or would I be better leaving them alone?

Also I was thinking of getting or making some covers for them, can they be covered like other radiators?

Thanks for any advice you can give me...

  • Removing the front cover gives access to the top and bottom. You can hoover them out that way. However, I would not open the inner cover that gives access to the bricks and elements as this could dislodge the bricks.

Also be careful when removing the cover fixing screws, the ones I used to work on (Unidare) had the wall bracket combined into the side plate of the heater with small screws. Basically if you removed the screws the heater was no longer attached the the wall and could fall forwards. You don't want one of those things falling on you!

Provided the ventilation at the top and bottom is clear the heater should be working efficiently.
