Can They Take Out Money ?

I have a Visa Debit account with Alliance and Leicester. My son has a courtesy car for which i gave my account details as deposit. The hire company withdrew 50 pounds then credited it back to my account. The problem is that we have noticed a cigarette burn in the seat of the car, plus a wheel trim is missing. Can the hire company having my card details withdraw money from my account to cover repairs etc. Is there anything i can do to stop them withdrawing money from my account. I have just put in a cheque and waiting for it to clear.

  • Yes they can. It would have been in the terms and conditions of your son's insurance policy. Any reason why he did not have a card?

He has only got a flex account and the hire company needed a debit card,it is not a CPA agreement so i think i will cancel my card and see if they will send me a new one .
  • If you cancel your debit card-unless you close your account or change your sort code of account details-the company can still draw funds-changing the card pan number will not work unfortunatley! The only way to do that is to log a fraud case and as you have said-you gave the card details-just thought I would let you know to save you the hassle of waiting for a new card-check with your issuing bank but i'm sure i'm right with this one!

The issuing company keeps open your details for just this reason. You cannot duck your obligations just by cancelling your card, thank goodness!

Of course they can. How on earth has your son managed to cause that damage?
