A Default seems as bad as a CCJ

My hubby has one default from almost 5 years ago (nearly paid) he has a PAYG mobile phone. He always seems to run out of money! So at first my friend said try mobile company 3, he did and got turned down. (My friend has 2 defaults and got a contract)
I then read on another thread if you apply for just a Pay Monthly sim, the scoring will be lower and may have success!
Wrong, he applied to Orange for their £15 monthly sim and got a knock back.
To me a default is just as bad as a CCJ.

an unsatisfied default means that you can't (or won't) pay your current debts...... so obviously new creditors are reluctant to lend you money.0

Clapton, the OP states the default is five years old, and the poster is paying the debt. Sometimes things can happen in life, and if there was a string of current unpaid defaults, then your comment could be justified.
A default notice is just as bad as a CCJ.
I have been through the mill, and just about escaped now! I have one remaining default, due to come off in June, then my file is clear. I have other credit, including Vanquis and Capital One, as well as Citi credit card and bank account with an interest free o/d. All of this is reported on my credit file, as is my mortgage also. I have been extremely dilligent in keeping all of these up to date, so that when my credit file is viewed, there are lots of little green circles.
I now have two mobile contracts, both with o2. One is a regular contract with a handset supplied, the other a sim only tariff, called Simplicity. At the time of taking the first contract around three years ago, I had three defaults and two satisfied CCJ's. One of the defaults was with Orange, the remaining one is with T Mobile, yet o2 still gave me a contract deal. The sim only tariff was taken last year, still with the T Mobile default showing.
I think, that if you have other good credit information on your file then o2 are perhaps more sympathetic. However, do bear in mind that the number of recent credit searches on your file can be detrimental, and it could be worth waiting a few months for the current searches to age a little before applying again.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. I'm sorry, I don't apologise. That's just the way I am. Homer (Simpson)0 -

you are rushing to judgement...
I am simply explaining WHY a potential creditor is likely to see an unsatified default as a no-no for further credit.
I'm afraid that because the Oh is paying something towards the debt, still means that the debt is not being repaid according to the contract.
And so, if the OP can't afford to pay the existing debts according to the contract, then they will likely conclude that the OP can't repay a new debt according to the contract.
whether its fair or not or how the OP came to be in this situation is something I haven't commented upon.0 -
O2 generally are more sympathetic, inmypocket. They gave me a contract based on nothing except my bank account info, but they did ask me to pay a deposit towards it (which nobody else would, they'd just point blank refuse).0

My main point was that I don't see any difference in a default as to a CCJ on a credit file. I was to blame for over committing myself to CC's and bank loans. My hubby has always paid his debts albeit at a slower rate!
The bank (HSBC) also added PPI which was total miselling as we couldn't have claimed for it. So the debt would have been settled some time ago now.
