My fiance bought a book the other week soverign by cj sansom from borders

I usually keep reciepts for ages but he stuck it on top of the microwave and it fell on the floor and the bin has since been emptied

He is us to page 220 and it then has page 400 to someting then page 279

Dont know if they will take it back without a reciept or swap it as he obviously wants to read it still

I have receipts for months and this one I got rid of thinking he's started reading it he wont need it

Do you mean the pages are in the wrong order? If so, then it's an obvious flaw and they should swap it for a new copy with no problems.

I will give them a ring and ask when they are open

Not sure when that will be due to the bank holiday

no pages 220 to 279 are missing completly it goes 220 440 to say 480 back to 279 then the rest of the book

He wouldnt care if they were in the book at all but are missing

I had that with a book & took it back to WHSmiths without a receipt - they just changed it for me as they can claim back from the publishers.

If they refuse then in this case I would nout feel guilty about buying a new copy, doing a switch, and returning the old copy.

If there's any proof of the purchase at all (shows on bank or cc statement) then that should be fine. Shops don't have to issue a receipt as far as I know so having the receipt is only a help, not an essential.

Chances are all the others on the shelf are all the same, so they'll probably give a refund. Exchange might be difficult if they all have the same fault. The publishers might have unbound the book to correct an error, then put it back in the wrong order and missing bits! (Although this would be very unprofessional of Macmillan!!)

A friend of mine ordered a book from an online shop, it came with pages missing. Friend told the website, and they sent out a non-reject book that day. I'm sure the place you got your book from will do the same.

As has been said, the company can claim the cost from the publisher.

SOGA states that you don't need a receipt if the product is defective (I think ).

This obviously is, so you should be able to exchange no problem. If it was bought with a card, you could take the statement as proof should you need to......

if there has been a fault with a large batch they will no doubt already be aware of it
