With 4 camera's, you are going to get interference, both ways, noise on the camera's, and probably wireless dropouts on the router. Not a lot you can do about it.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Have you thought about returning your wireless CCTV kit and going for a wired system? This would be far more stable and lower maint. Only 4 cameras is not a massive amount of cabling.

    Hi all,

Thanks for all of your input so far.

As for getting a wired camera system....well... I really want a wireless system so that I can put the cameras anywhere.

Now then, back to my original problem, interference and changing the channel of my router. (the cameras are on a fixed frequency)

As I said in post 4, when I changed the channel that the router was using, my lappy lost contact with the router.
I could not do the 192.168.0.1 thing as the lappy could not find the router when I did do the aforementioned.
Also the lappy could not see the router when I performed a wireless scan, although it did find my neighbours secured network.

It was only by a stroke of good fortune that I could change the channel of the router back to the channel that the lappy could see using the pc.

What was I doing / did I do, wrong?

    Cheers

    Leo

Wire the laptop up to get to the config screen.

with so much wireless floating around, you are going to have problems. changing the channel on the router shouldn't stop a connection, unless you go above ch 11 and have american wireless drivers

Just for reference the whole channel 13 thing is common.

In the US WiFi is only licenced on channels 1 to 11 so some laptops (my Toshiba is a good example) only function on these channels. Therefore if you set your router to channel 13 (or 12) it will just not work.

    Hi all,

    Thanks for that,
Looks like that's the channel 13 thing sorted then. So thats channel 12 and 13 unavailable for use by my router.
I only chose channel 13 as it was the last channel in the list that was availailable for me to use.

    For everyones onformation,
Lappy is an Acer (with which I am well pleased).
Router is a Netgear DG834GT and I have never messed with the drivers.
PC is a Dell (again no problems)

I may just try again and choose a low numbered channel.
It does strike me as strange that the PC could see the router and the Lappy could not after I had changed channels.
    Any ideas anyone??

I am aware that with all the wireless stuff knocking about then a conflict could easily occur.

As we are about to move house I am seriously considering dumping my landline, (which also automatically gets rid of sky :( ) and using my mobile phones data connection to connect to the internet.
I am on T Mobile and I already have unlimited internet access on my mobile phone together with hundreds of unused minutes. (shameful, sorry Martin)
I am well aware of the data limitations.
This will then make the wireless router redundent and open the channels for my camera system.

    What do you all think

I had exactly the same problem, I looked at the frequency chart for the router and channel 10 is the highest in the band 2.572GHZ, the rest sit around 2.410 GHZ - 2.417 GHZ, this solved the problem.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

What do you mean? What solved the problem?

Should I put the router on a lower channel? Would putting the router on channel 1 or 2, mean that my cameras will not interfere with the router?

Find out what frequency your cameras are tuned to then set your router channel as far away as possible, for example, if your camer is on 2.415GHZ then change your router to 2.572GHZ which is channel 10. This should reduce bleedover interference between channels.

Thanks for that, I aint got a clue what frequency the cameras are using and no way of finding out.
However, I will do a trial and error thing next weekend, when I have more time, and post my results back here.
