Double Glazing quote - any opinions

Options
Hi,
We are looking to replace our front (800x2000), patio (1750x2000) and back door (800x2000), plus the kitchen window (1200x800), as it is part of the same unit as the back door.

We have just been quoted £8700  for the two doors, window and French windows to replace the patio door, in mahogany woodgrain finish. We are not replacing the existing windows, so the doors need to be woodgrain.

After laughing insultingly at the salesman, he swiftly dropped the price to £4500  if we could have this done in April, which is not a problem, however this still seems very high. We would not be looking for a finance deal, either, which didn't seem to go down well! I have never obtained quotes for double glazing before, so I am really not sure what's reasonable, but this was a standard 'this is our book price, and our current offer would give you this much off...' then into the heavy sell patter.

Does anyone have an opinion on this? Am I being unreasonable to think that this is not a good price? We're in North Staffordshire, so I'll take any recommendations for local tradesmen who'll do a better job, too!

Thanks in advance

£8700 is extortionate. Shop around, you should pay at least half of that. I recently got a local company in for one of my customers, she had a 17ft (!)by 4 ft high window replaced with 4 openers in it and a small bathroom window, for £1600. Patio doors are between £600 and £1400 depending on sizes and features.

    Patio Doors £1000
    Front Door £ 750
    Back Door £ 700
    Kitchen Window £ 350

These are around the prices you would pay to have your Frames delivered on Site.
All you need then is a local Joiner/Window fitter to fit them for you . His fee £500 approx.

    Total =£3,300
I can get you a definite price for you if you require.

UKWoody and Macduf, thank you for the info - it's very hard to know what's a reasonable price when you've never bought windows and doors before.

Macduf - I am not opposed to ordering the windows and getting someone to fit them, however I have been asking for local recommendations, mostly from people I work with, for a while now, and have not yet come across anyone who's had windows fitted recently.

Always grateful for any more suggestions!

I used a company called the Nottingham Window and Conservatory Centre--I could find their number if you wanted. I used them on my last 3 houses, including my current one in Sheffield. They were first rate and have recommended to family and friends, price is reasonable but really good quality, my first house was not with them and I wish it was.... I got a real cowboy

If you liked the company who did the quote, just keep haggling. I had my windows replaced last year and in the end said "I just can't afford to pay more than X" and they met it. If they've already dropped to £4,500 I reckon you can get them down to about £3,500-800, depending on how much business they're doing at the mo.
