  • You'll need a wireless router, depending on if you want one with a modem built in you'll have to check whether you get your internet via cable or the telephone line. They're quite cheap these days but it is worth going for a decent brand such as linksys etc.

plug the Virgin modem into it and run the wizard on the router and it sets itself up.

Hi again, today my frend came round and tried out a wired router with my modem to see iff it would transmit connections to both devices and the modem only transmitted to one, i was also told that the modem that i have is only a standard modem and does not support some kind of inside router that will transmit the multiple IP addreses instead of just one???? my modem was changed recently due to the original modem breaking i assume most peopl have with virgin broadband
(White with green lights) and was replaced with a small black modem that seems to be useless. I just wanted to know if that link you sent me wit the router if that router woulsd work with my modem this is the name of the modem if it helps Scientific Atlanta 2100 its black with green lights please help
    Thanks

Firstly.. what your friend said doesn't make sense.
The modem itself connects to the router via a cable. The modem connects to the internet and then connects to router to the internet so any device that connects to the internet connects through the router which connects via the modem.
The router will deal with all the IP addresses needed for each client machine so the modem doesn't need to deal support more than one as it is only dealing with 1 IP address and that's the IP address of the router.

Not sure on the make and model of the modem they have but it is black with green lights and you should have no problem connecting with one.

i can't say definately but i can't see why not. It's a cable modem and Virgin is cable. I've set one up myself with no problems..

buy router - unbox - plug in - connect to modem via the network (RJ45) cable, connect computer using an RJ45 cable just incase the wireless isn't enabled - open internet browser - type in the IP address of the router (probably 192.168.1.1) - follow wizard.

    all done

Traveller I'm with Virgin and have a Scientific Atlanta 2100, it works fine and allows faster speeds than the older ones. I think your friend was thinking of the combined modem routers you can use with an ADSL connection but your'e on cable.

For what it's worth I use a Netgear WGR614 with mine and it's working fine with a wired PC, wireless laptop and wireless Wii.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die
