Cancelling a card won't stop people taking money from it?

Hi everybody

I have an MBNA credit card, which I'm now worried about because I think a company holds the details on it, and could potentially put future charges on it without my authorisation. I phoned up MBNA a minute ago and asked them to cancel the card and send me a new one, but the operator told me that this would not prevent any future transactions where there was a "subscription" in place. She was unable to explain what a "subscription" was, though.

Can anyone else? As far as I'm concerned, if I cancel a card, I don't expect anyone to be able to take any money off it. How does a card company know the difference between a "subscription" and an unauthorised transaction?
