Hi - asking on behalf of my in-laws, I can't find anything on Google. In-laws are due 1st MOT on their car on 24 /4 - bank hol monday. They couldn't get it booked in this week, so have MOT booked for 9am Tues. They are supposed to be visiting friends this weekend, Sat - Mon morning. Does anyone know what time of day the MOT expires? Can they legally drive home on Monday morning ? All advice appreciated!

Nope. You can only drive a car without an MOT (which as of midnight it will be) to and from a booked appointment for its MOT test.

But. We have all done it. (Driven for that extra day or two).

As said, it will run out midnight. Only legal driiving they can do on the Tuesday is to an MOT station. Can they not get a test tomorrow? Should be alot of places open. Suggest phone around.

And we've not all done it, I've not Skylight, I'm not perfect either :D

Do you mean it expires midnight at the start of Monday? (as opposed to midnight at the end?) Sorry to be so thick!

Midnight at the end of the last day on the MOT certificate but in this case, the last day the car is MOT "exempt" is the Sunday (23rd).

At 00:01 on the Monday the car will be illegal to drive.

Have you double checked the dates the car was registered on? It definately should be done on the 24th??

Thanks for that advice - they are fairly elderly and like to go to the same mechanic. He can't fit them in until Tues 9am, and if it means that the whole of Mon is illegal driving, they would rather cut their visit short and come back on Sunday, then just drive to the test centre on Tues morning. Thanks for your help!

There should be MOT stations open tomorrow. Recommend phone around, its not worth the risk. So much traffic and accidents on the road over this bank holiday, it would be my luck to get caught out. I'm a bit pessimistic re these sort of things! :D

I always book our cars in for mot 1 month before they run out.Hence giving plenty of time to get any work done required to pass the test:T

If there's nothing wrong with the car I would not worryabout the last day. The fact that it is booked in for the 1st working day after its 3rd birthday should be enough to show there was no real intent

I am not saying this is correct or lawfull, but it's what I would do. (well actually as already said I would have had it moted much earlier).;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

, so have MOT booked for 9am Tues.

as they have it booked for an mot, they will be allowed to drive it to the mot station on this morning, even though mot will have expired, but in future best practice is, as other people have stated get them to book it in a bit earlier, i think you can book it in up to 3 weeks previous to the expiry date, and the mot station, will continue the new mot on from the original expiry date, and then this way if there are any problems it gives them plenty of time to get them rectified, but as being this is there first mot on this car, i am presuming that it is a new car, well 3 years old, so there should not be any major problems, i would hope anyway, hth Dave.
Take every day as it comes!!
