Abbey - Overdrawn

Hi, I have an Abbey 16-18 current account. When I check my balance it says my balance is £x and my available balance is overdrawn £x.

This has happened about four times now in the past month or so. Will I get charged for going overdrawn? It has happened by accident each time and has only been 3p or so.

Many thanks.

  • You may well, probably best to give them a call as they may refund you if its your first charge

if u went OD by a D/D then yesy ull be charged, for that plus the unauthourised overdraft.
  • It wasn't a direct debit. Just accidental when buying things.

I thought that it wasn't possible to go overdrawn with a Visa Electron anyway?

So you must learn to manage your account so that there is time for any cheques to clear or BACS payments to reach your account in time for any withdrawals.

I'm not sure whether the 3p or thereabouts refers to the amount you have been overdrawn by or the amount of the charge.

If you have only been charged very small amounts, it seems that you can have been overdrawn by only a few pounds for a short time - like not getting it right in working out when you will have cleared funds.

If the 3p is the amount you have been overdrawn by, then you are likely to be charged but you can go into the branch and ask to speak with someone and ask them very nicely if they can let you off this time. Ask them to explain about the cheque clearance times or whatever is causing you to be overdrawn - this will demonstrate that you do want to keep your account in good order.

Find out exactly what the clearance time is for the account you have and ensure you don't have withdrawals which fall foul of that.
  • Thanks for all the advice.

What I think it is, is iTunes. When I buy a song, the money (after looking over past statements) seems to come out a few days after I have bought songs.

If I do have charges to pay, when will I find out how much they are etc. A letter in the post or something?

Think you will get a note with your next statement that the charges (and they will say how much) will be taken from your account at some specified date in the future - this would enable you to make arrangements to have funds in your account to meet the charges when they are taken. They won't just take the money without giving you advance notice.
  • They can't levy a charge on a minor
Loan-£3600 only 24 months of payments to go!!!
All debt consolodated and cards destroyed!!
As D'Ream would sing 'Things.....can only get better'!!!
  • jamman you definitely WILL NOT be charged, you cannot be charged under 18.

If you are it will be immediately refunded.

Your balance will stay negative until you pay funds in, but you wont be charged

Ah right, that's what I thought.

How sure are you of this?

It's called the Consumer Credit Act 1974 - only applies to over 18's :D

EDIT: I have no idea why I'm grinning like that - I'm 33! (Must be the wine!!)
