teaonshirt, you have the right to cancel a line activation up until the day before it switches on.

Talk Talk can takeover your CLI without knowing what it is anyway as BT Openreach provides that service. basically talk talk are a on the WLR2 OR stack and can do what is known as a WLS order (working line start order). all they need to do this is your address. WLR2 systems will match this address and offer them the choice of taking over a working line. this will then go to OR provisioning teams and will flag the CLI to use to them.

Any company that offers line rental can ask BT Openreach to start or install a line. However most wont as its cheaper for them to get a customer to open up a line iwth BT then they take it over. Cheaper for the company, not the customer.The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 20 -
I want to change from Virgin Media and need my BT line connected. As I want to go elsewhere will I still be tied in to a year's line rental with BT on Option 1 as well as the connection cost?
What is the best way to go about changing without being offline or too much out of pocket?0 -
I've tasked myself with helping my mother in law get broadband for the first time and I'm looking for the most cost effective option overall including land line calls but without the need to prefix phone calls etc.
I have been looking at Talk Talk 2 International which is approx £16.50/month including line rental and broadband but they tell me I need an active BT line in order to sign up.
Several years ago my mother in law switched to Virgin and still receives that phone service and TV, but currently no broadband. One option is to add the broadband to the Virgin deal but that would be more expensive than talk talk and Virgins call rates are higher.
I've checked the existing BT line which remains and there is no dialtone. I've checked with BT and they have confirmed the line is "ceased" and that they would charge £125 to re-connect with a 12 month minimum contract. To get the Talk Talk deal, I would need to take my line rental from Talk Talk which I couldn't do if tied to a 12 month contract with BT.
Talk Talk say I have no choice but to go with BT and then come back to them in 12 months but what I really want is for Talk Talk to go to BT OpenReach and get them to connect the line so I can take up the Talk Talk service. Now I've read all of the above and I'm still unclear as to what my options are with a "ceased"/inactive BT line. Can Talk Talk get the line reconnected via BT OpenReach but just don't want to - they tell me BT won't allow them to? At the end of the day BT will still get their money just via Talk Talk rather than direct from me.
Any information on the above would be most welcome, as would any other ideas for other providers that might be more helpful.
DrunkStar - You obviously know what you are talking about and you have already mentioned a WLS order, but what are the options for a non-working line?

Yes.
They're telling you rubbish.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

Alright, welcome to the forums matey. Yeah, TT could get the line installed and anyone who claims BT wont let them is speaking bull. As a company they have chosen not to offer this service. As all the others have said total rubbish, they can but choose not to.
Think of it like this, BT Openreach is a separate company from BT and any telecom provider can ask them to install a new line and pay the cost for installation and they will do it.
As for broadband access for Mother in law, as she is already with Virgin (assuming she is in a cable area) I would look at what they do and use them, they may be more expensive looking but to have to have a BT line installed and enter into a years contract could work out to be more messy and more expensive.
Keep it simple.
How long has she been with Virgin?
If she is out of contract and has never done a discount deal she most likely could reduce the overhaul package cost from what is advertised.
She may need to tell them she is thinking of leaving (and thats true) and will need to get past through to customer retentions to get a discount.

You're talking about fixing a reported fault, not a (re-)connection, two entirely different scenarios.

I have spoken with the chairmans office at length on several occasions and it was made very clear that if the wiring inside the property is good and fault-free, a connection charge would not apply.
Also bear in mind that my service agreement is with BT, NOT BT Openreach, so why you quote their prices:rolleyes:
A cease and a re-provide is not excuse to charge someone a connection fee, and I would advise anyone who is charged to challenge it.0
