Credit Card Fraud - Apple Store UK Website?

Options
I just wanted to make people aware of possible card fraud going on after using the Apple UK Store Website. I recently got my first Credit card to use in "emergencies". A family member applied for this for me to use in emergencies but also asked me to purchase a Birthday gift for myself on the Apple site (they would then pay off the bill in full). I did this a couple of weeks ago and it has been the only purchase made on the card. Last night I got a call from my bank asking me if I'd been abroad in the last 6 days, to which I replied no, I hadn't. It turns out that since using my card "on the internet" my card had been fraudulently used in AUSTRALIA to make calls to the Middle East upto the value of £476. Luckily I have insurance on the card to cover fraud.

As I said, I've used the card once, on just the one website, and so far have receieved no statements, or logged into my account online since having it. I've drawn the conclusion that this would probably have happened behind the purchase I made on the Apple store..

I would check your computer NOW before you make any other online transactions.

I would say its unlikely that the fraud occurred from Apple. If you had said some unknown website that you stumbled across on google then I would have agreed that it was likely to be down to the site but it would not be in Apple's interests to have this sort of thing go on.

I'd believe the apple store is safer than your computer - best get checking what nasties are installed there.

I agree with everyone else, considering the encryption etc that Apple use I'd think it was almost certainly the result of a keylogger on the OP's own PC.

Yeah, these were precautions I'd taken and double checked immediately but nothing has shown. I use Mac's which are pretty safe machines, but also run an Internet cleanup which alerts the computer user of keyloggers, spyware etc...

I think the reason people find it unlikely is that if it is the case that it was fraud from the use of Apple's store it would be the first reported case I know of in the entire world. Have you contacted Apple?

Macs are NOT safe - it's this kind of apathy with respect to security on the osx platform that is going to land alot of people in a lot of bother probably quite soon. Whilst there are no major malware out in the wild at the moment there are many exploits which apple computers are vulnerable to. The main reason that there isn't any real spyware/worm/trojan threats atm is the limited market share that apple has, but as this grows then the financial gains for the people producing this software grows. At some point soon they're going to realise that most mac users are so blind with the 'mac is safe' idea that they are going to release something against macs and when this happens it will cause havoc

I would contact apple like everyone else has said, Maybe there servers are not that secure or some script has gone wrong and it is just transmitting your card number without encrypting it!

It could be nothing to do with your transaction, computer, or Apple. It's just a number...
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
