Whereabouts are you going? It's been 20 years since I went, so I don't know how much it might've changed. We found Rio dangerous (mugged twice on the bus - drivers in collusion with muggers) and only stayed a couple of days. Iguacu Falls is well worth a visit:

Ouro Preto is gorgeous and has an abandoned goldmine; you go down on a large skateboard, basically, and can pan for gold. Quite a funky place with a lot of students:
