Yorkshire Chickens

After spending what seems like forever researching chicken keeping, we are at last getting our act together.
There seems to be a sad lack of Northern poultry places and before we start trekking out all over the place I wondered if anyone could recommend somewhere in Yorkshire to get chickens from?
Cheers

Have you checked the classifieds in Practical Poultry and Country Smallholding magazines? You can also check the PP board at http://www.kelseyinfo.co.uk/yabb/YaBB.pl (there are for sale and wanted boards, and I have bought successfully from there before)

    Thanks to you both :)

I've checked the classifieds and will look at the forum today. We have a short list of places to visit, I was just hoping someone might have some personal recommendation.

Malton Poultry market on the third (check this) saturday of every month, usually has a good variety of poultry. Lots of different prices.
It really depends on how many you want, if it is just 2-3 then a farmer or small poultry breeder will be able to help. There is also Organisations like North Yorkshire Smallholders which have a small magazine with adverts in.

    Cheers everyone.

I'm a bit wary of buying from Markets given that I've never bought livestock before. Selby Market is one of the places we have down to go have a looksee though.

Markets are ok if you know what you're doing (or have someone with you who does!) but if you haven't kept chickens before then you simply won't have a feeling for what constitutes a sick bird, and all those little tell tale signs to look out for. If you have an experienced friend with you, then fine, but otherwise, I'd avoid for now.

My Mind wanders, if found please return.
  • You could google bhwt which is a battery hen rescue group who rehome the hens with people who want to provide a free range environment in exchange for a few for eggs. They don't have a co-ordinator showing on their map for yorkshire but it may be worth ringing them to see if they have anything for you. Edit: this is an adoption scheme.
