I've tested an Eee PC out using linux and windows xp. It runs Windows XP very well but the screen on almost all of these laptops is 7" - I have pretty good eye sight but after a couple of hours work I was getting eyestrain. In the next few months a whole load of new laptops are coming out which will lower the prices further and a large number of them will have a 9" screen which I think will be much more usable.
I want a very portable computer for note taking and web browsing - I'm going to wait for the 9" Eee PC that should be out in the next month or so.0 -
Elonex are a BECTA accredited supplier to the UK education sector, and this laptop is fine for use by students, although for use by teachers Elonex offer more powerful machines.

To be fair what BECTA say is irrelevant - for example FIPS (standards of networking/support in schools), whilst a good idea is unaffordable to most schools. I'd take anything they say with a large pinch of salt!0

Im writing this now on the asus Eee,its really good its no deskto replacement, but the wifi is brilliant it picks up where my older lappy never had a chance, albeit I use mine for internet browsing when im looking after the little one and not much else but as commented before it comes with open office and a few other use full programs.I like the size --the keyboard does take getting use to but i much prefer it on my lap compared to a 15ins lappy.0

Readers may care to note that BECTA recently advised against the use of Windows Vista or Office 2007 in UK schools, and instead stated:Pupils, teachers and parents should also be made aware of the wide range of free-to-use products currently available and on how to use and access them.0

I agree with most of the comments above, the Asus eee is sort of midway between a laptop and a PDA. The screen is the major letdown and new ones are coming, however, bundling windows and improving the screen size also means bumping up the price to what you could you paying for a full blown laptop.
Make no mistake for ordinary surfing etc this machine is surprisingly fast, particularly on boot up - a friend of mine has a 4.5gig laptop and embarrassingly the Asus eee boots up faster.
As a mini machine you can take to meetings, on transport or just as a light machine on your lap - for only £200 it's great!0 -
