But not if you're ten or eleven.

Well actually they look pretty good for older people too, I might buy one for my mother, as it apparently quite rugged and should survive a knock.

    Ultra-Portable, laptop / tablet chassis

For ultimate portability the ONE has a small form factor chassis, weighing in at less than 1Kg. Designed to be hard wearing and resistant to shock the ONE will easily take the rigours of daily life, and with solid state memory (no moving parts), the ONE also gives superb reliability.
My Mind wanders, if found please return.

While they certainly aren't my cup of tea (I'd much rather pay £260 for a full size laptop), they certainly have their niche. If you have a child who insists that they'd like a PC for typing up work and the occasionaly email then this really isn't too much of a step up in price from the "toy" laptops which can cost up to £70. While it isn't a stylish as the EeePC, its half the price, will do what it's designed to, and will probably let you know if the real reason your kid needs a laptop is to get assignments written on or (more likely) to play games on ;)

The last I heard was that Elonex were taking orders and expected to start delivery in June. Has this changed?

Seems good for the price, being bought as first laptop for 3 year old, will suit him to play on the cbeebies website.

Phanco is correct. There's no Flash on here so you won't be able to play on the cbeebies site (or the vast majority of sites with flashy interactive bits).

You can easily install flash on linux,
I have a linux machine and flash can easily be installed from the adobe website. I would quite like to buy one of these but not sure about the 1GB flash memory. Although I would recommend linux as it's easy to get used to. :rotfl:

Don't let the fact that this machine does not run Windows put you off.

That shouldn't be what puts you off. Look ay its processor speed. Whilst this is no longer the be all and end all there are still limits and to put it in perspective a computer I owned 10 years ago (longer probably) has a faster core speed. It's going to be limited in its uses, I don't see it as a childs laptop (which is what many people seem to be suggesting they'd get it for) but simply as a portable word processing and surfing tool.

If you go to their website you will see they are doing another one now with 2Gb memory for £119.

The kind of people thinking of this are non-techie mums buying it for their kids. They're not going to want to mess about on BASH typing in various commands to attempt to install on an unknown version of Linux.

Also, the Flash requirements state that it needs a 700MHz processor. So I really wouldn't want to try to use it on this machine.

The Asus eee is a similar machine but with a much better spec - true it is more expensive, Currys have them online and with voucher and quidco you can reduce the price from £219 to about £202. Asus eee is also Linux - this is a 4gb machine with a webcam but it also has a Celeron processor and you can run Windows XP (which you need to buy extra). The machine boots really really fast 20 - 40 seconds. It has a full suite of programs including Open Office and has been outselling the Wii in the states. They are in Toys R Us stores which is where I got mine..... Love It!
