Modem router hangs up.... Solution??

Happy Easter everybody and hope you're enjoying your holiday. My Linksys wireless modem looks like it crashes on occasions and causes the network to fall apart. The way to get it to start working again is to switch off and then back on again which isn't really a big deal if I am physically there to disconnect and reconnect. The problem is when I am away and trying to access my PC remotely only to find that it is disconnected. Now, is there a way to reboot or restart the modem remotely even if it appears disconnected from the net?? Thanks in advance for any help.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

There is a remote administration option buried away in the config, but if it is dropping the line/connection, it won't helpEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Thanks albert. Unfortunately it is disconnecting but I thought about installing one of these timer switches to switch it off & on from the mains a couple of times a day. Thanks again.Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0

Hi,
Are you by any chance using a peer to peer client regularly?
Some routers don't handle the traffic well and freeze up. If this is the case you can instruct the p2p software to make fewer connections which usually stops the problem. You could try borrowing a friends router to see if you still have these issues with different hardware.
Hope it's this simple.
Good luck.

Are you with Pipex ? If so then depending on your telephone exchange you may have been moved to Tiscali equipment. If so your upload speed if on the MAX ADSL would have probably halved from 448 to 288, and you max synch may have changed.
Have had a problem for 2 weeks now where the system disconnects every 12 hours on the dot !, the modem indicates it is synched to the exchange, and connected to the far end as it shows our fixed ip address. It does not appear that the modem crashes as we can access it over the network, it will reconnect if we either powerdown/powerup or reconnect if the telephone line is disconnected from the router, wait 10 mins and plug it in again.
Prior to the change the router was rock solid for weeks and weeks......0 -
Thanks guys for the informative replies. p2p is sometimes on when it happens but not always. I have also noticed it happening a couple of times when I mount a NAS drive connected to the network and do have the feeling that the router disconnects when it is under some kind of 'data pressure' if that makes any sense. I am on AOL and been also having more disconnections since they apparently started migrating their network onto TalkTalk. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the have also halved their speeds or data transfer rates in a way that is affecting my modem. At times I loss the internet but keep the local network connection but at others the whole thing disconnects completely and I have to unplug.
Still get the feeling that my best bet would be to setup a couple of automatic reboot cycles for the PC and router daily when I am away for few days and need remote access to my network. Happy Easter.:beer:Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0 -
Hi Aiadi,
the first thing I would do is update the firmware on the router. You should be able to do this by going to the manufacturer website and looking for downloads for your device.
It sounds like a hardware problem possibly caused by too many disconnection/reconnection's on your broadband line which is becoming all too common sadly.
Even if there was a command you could send to the router to reboot it, this would be useless to you as when it disconnects there is no physical way of interacting with it outside of the property it is in.
If the firmware update doesn't resolve the problem then your idea of a timer sounds like the best option.
Hope this helps
