The Great Cheap Nappy Hunt!

Options
Hi Folks

Apologies is this has already been done on here - I had a look through and couldn't find anything. Also, apologies if this should really be on the 'I Wanna' board, but I thought it was fairly relevant for in here too...

Anyway, we have a lovely baby daughter who is 4 weeks old on Friday, and we're quickly discovering how quickly we seem to be eating through Nappies, Baby Wipes etc., so I thought I'd pick the collective money saving brain to see who does the cheapest Nappies! Where is cheapest? Who has offers on at the moment? Are any of the supermarket brands as good as pampers?

Any help would greatly benefit my wallet... :)

Cheers,

Shaun

    Good old fashioned terry nappies.
Including the cost of a washer, a drier AND the running costs they are cheaper.
Use wet cotton wool or a soft baby flannel, or even cut up bits of old flanelette sheet to use as wipes.

    Hi shaun

congratulations on the new baby. If you wish to stick with disposibles have you registered with the baby clubs
eg pampers and huggies . I think there are others too (not sure).
I get vouchers through the post and my Asda deduct the amount off my shopping bill even if I haven't bought the product (as long as they stock it). Tescos do this too but mine are forever changing the voucher rules so I don't bother trying.

Use cotton wool and water whenever possible to clean baby, wipes arn't really necessary (my midwife told me this). Wipes do come in handy for when you're out & about but I only buy wipes when they're on a "Buy One Get One Free Offer" - Boots, Tesco & Sainsburys regularly have these offers on. Asda do some good deals during promotional "baby weeks".

Its worth trying different brands of nappies, they're all shaped slightly differently so some will fit your baby better than others. I used Motherease washable nappies until I went back to work, then switched reluctantly to disposables. I now use Lidl's own brand nappies after they were recommended by a mum of twins with excema, and she found these nappies were the only ones which didn't cause rashes. They're also a lot cheaper than pampers!

Not to mention far healthier for the baby and the environment.

The only downside I can see with Terries is they can be a bit daunting, the prefold ones seem to be just as easy as a disposable to operate but they are expensive.
Babies R us are doing Bambino Mio ones for £14.95 for 8, as far as I can tell they are all you need save for the disposable liners, if that's the case then stock up all the sizes as similar sets are over £50 :o

    And congratulations of course ;D

I think our 3 week old baby goes through about 10 a day. I find the huggies size 1 to be a bit on the small side. I'd imagine you are buying size 2 by now.

Aside from registering with Pampers and Huggies you could surf Ebay and buy money off coupons for the above at a cheaper price if you don't have too many bidders competing.

Also register with Tescos toddler and baby club, they will send you vouchers too (Tesco specific though).

    Good luck!

  • I have a seven month old daughter and it is unbelievable the cost of nappies. We use Pampers and find that if we buy the big box for around £11 they can last quite a while...

Just to let you know the profit margin on Baby Wipes - I buy them direct from a customer of ours at work. I get a pack of 12 for £7.92 the retail cost of these are £19.08 !!

They really know where to make some money....
If the world is a stage... I want better lighting!
  • cotton wool and tap water is a safe and cheaper thing to use

but the best baby bum wipes are in fact cloth
you can make up your own wipe solutions (keep wipes dry or wet in a tub depending how many you get through in a day)

    http://www.thenappylady.co.uk/Advice/NappyTip.asp?NappyTipID=11

    gives you wipe recipes!

you can use old towelling, fleece or the best are ikea or poundland flannels

I find these far more effective than a flimsy wet wipe and safer on baby skin too

I have however endulged and bought a bottle of butterfly blends wipe solution concentrate which lasts for ages - I make it up dilutied in a spray bottle for out and about - it also makes a good hand cleaner when you have no clean water to wash hands with
(at home I tend to use warm water to clean)
Baby Milk Action is a non-profit organisation which aims to save lives and to end the avoidable suffering caused by inappropriate infant feeding.
  • What a good idea, I guess you just wash them with the nappies.

Genius, save a fortune, I have also heard the chemicals on wipes are not very safe ???
    Waddle you do eh?
  • Sarah, I have just looked at the recipes, they are lovely, the one with Chamomile reminded me, where I used to work an old lady used to come in and I would offer her tea, and she used to have Chamomile and said it reminded her of her Mother but never knew why.
After her Mother died an Aunt told her that she used Chamomile to clean her when changing her nappy to prevent nappy rash, she remembered the smell from all those years before, ahh.

Sorry I didn't post this earlier. My hands have also been full with a new baby (3 weeks old today). The wife and I are just getting used to having a toddler and a new baby. Thnakfully I had 3 1/2 weeks off to help.

Huggies are changing the packaging on their nappies. I got some for both my toddler and new baby reduced to £2.77-ish instead of £6.50-ish. A good bargain. None left in Tesco Castle Lane, Bournemouth as I got the last 2 packs yesterday.
