Power surge took out motherboard, CPU and hard disk drive. Hubby replaced and upgraded these. At the same time re-installing windows XP Pro which gave 28 days to register but wouldn't allow this as the product key had been used too many times. He then went away on business during which the 28 day grace period expired. PC now refusing to do anything other than register with Microsoft with a second key at a cost of $84. The original key being irretrivable from the hard drive which has since been disposed of.
Short of formatting the hard-drive and losing all the data on it to install XP home (which I have multiple keys for) do I have any other options?

Presumably you still have this key. Just go through the activation process (i.e. phone Microsoft). I've had activation refused plenty of times from upgrading, hardware failure etc. The activation process has always been easy and painless."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
