I'm looking for a basic joystick, mostly for retro arcarde-style gaming on my laptop and I would like to have it to use this weekend so no time for ebay, amazon etc. Where's a good shop to find one? Argos? PC World? Suggestions appreciated.

There are but two joysticks to choose from in the Argos catalogue, and one of them is only available from their Extra stores. PC World is likely to have a wider selection, however their website only lists three, and none are guaranteed to be in stock.
If these are your only options, Argos would probably be the better bet. If you can, check out Currys, Currys Digital and/or Comet - and if you see a Saitek Cyborg joystick for under £30, grab it!0 -
A flight sim style stick isn't exactly going to be in keeping with the retro gaming thing.
I see you can get USB competition pro sticks, but no Bug sticks unfortunately.
My sticks of choice were:
The Bug
Competition Pro
and the Quickshot Maverick
You could always get an xbox stick and make the USB cable yourself. Just a case of splicing the cable, they're just USB but with a funny connector. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
If the joysticks look too 'sticky', there's always the humble joypad to consider. Unfortunately - depending on what you play - the cheapest option may not be entirely suitable. If you need something that can emulate mouse or keyboard input, your options will be limited.0

Used to have a Competition Pro for my C64 & Amiga.
Always hated Joypads and still hate them today. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -

Considerably easier than my suggestionThey say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0
