We were also stuck with the flying visit thing/not having previously dived, and we went on two boat trips where we went out from airlie beach on a catamaran and snorkelled on the inner part of the reef. The second trip was sailing an americas cup yacht, which I personally didn't get as much out of. Both were day trips and the snorkelling one was great.

I know proper divers would probably laugh at snorkelling as one step up from a glass bottomed boat, but it was amazing, I have never seen so many fish/luminous coral etc. Yes, if I went back I would probably learn to dive, but I would also do what we did again with no hesitation.

The boat trips are cheapish from what I remember with lots of people competing for business.
