Took car to garage who said could cost up to £800 to fix but if we did do privately would the accident still be recorded on our insurance as we have reported?

We do want to claim on insurance after all that's what its for but do not want it to be recorded as fault when it wasn't.

We spoke to insurance who say they will record it as a fault accident . Is that right? We knew we would have to pay excess but to have it recorded as a fault when it was something that could not have been avoided cant be fair.

When they refer to a claim as a 'fault' claim insurers are not using the word in the normal sense that you are referring to. Forget the issue of blame or avoidance.

A 'fault' claim is one where the insurer pays out but cannot recover its outlay. A 'non-fault' claim is one where the insurer pays out but then recovers its outlay from another party - or where the policyholder subsequently settles the damage privately so the insurer has not paid out at all.

The way I look at it if you claim through insurance you will pay £250 excess, have a fault claim on record and lose your no claims.

If you settle privately you will pay £800.

If your premium is already high then personally I wouldn't claim for it.

Thank you everyone for your help you've really cleared everything up. I've never made a claim before (as you can probably tell lol)
