  • Im in the same boat. Its a mine field out there! I want the best laptop I can buy for £400-£500. I want it for internet/Office applications for uni and a DVD from time to time. I dont have time for anything else because of a busy social life.

Best one ive found is this: HP G6061ea TK57 for £379 from Tesco.

    or for £499:

This would seem better spec than the one you mentioned from Currys and PC World but isnt there a "Top 10" list somewhere for idiots like me? LOL

Any help would be much appreciated!

Ideally you want to try to avoid AMD processors in laptops. Just from past experience I have noticed that these tend to overheat and there have been some issues with the mainboards that HP use and AMD processors that have been well documented and even gone as far as being admitted by HP Tech support but HP avoiding an official comment.

I dont want to scare you off but you need to know the truth. I have a HP machine at home but its an Intel. The machine spec is good. If you hate vista HP will also provide you with an XP downgrade disc for a small charge.

    Overall the spec is average.

    Hope this helps.

The sonys are popular machines, obviously because of the name. I would stick out till PC World launch their Easter Sale in full swing. I believe its from either friday or monday.

Be prepared to sold Norton (DO NOT TAKE IT) and also their extended warranty which they will sell as a no commitment feature. Then you have to suffer the much discussed "PC World Dont Pick Up Their Phones" issue.

It is good spec but if you hunt around you will find better prices. Look at John Lewis and also another make is Samsung that are surprisingly reliable. Their R20 range is very popular at the moment. Just put it in Froogle and you should get some good prices.
