New hard drive in laptop-now have problems

I've had to instal a new hard drive in my Dell laptop. Everything is fine apart from a couple of minor, but really annoying problems;

1) the " and @ keys have become transposed, and I can no longer get a pound sign, instead when I press shift and 3, I get a # symbol, and when I hit the # key, I get a \

I've gone through the control panel, and made sure everything is set to UK English, but to no avail.

2) My cursor jumps about all over the place when I'm typing so I end up typing gobbledegook!

I've googled this problem and the only thing being pointed to is unchecking a box through the control panel (which I've done) or a virus. I've run a virus scan with AVG and McAfee, but nothing's showing up.

Can anyone help? Like I say they are pretty minor problems but really annoying!

    With problem #1 this should be down to regional and language settings which can be accessed via the conrol panel or even through the language toolbar near the bottom right of the screen. You're using U.S. language settings for your keyboard at the moment - add English (U.K. settings) and remove the U.S. ones, then restart your PC and it should correct the problem, otherwise something is really wrong.

    Problem #2 suggests that it may be a keyboard porblem too. I'd have a look through both your keyboard and mouse settings and see if anything unusual is configured there. If any more symptoms show up let us know :)

    Thanks for the help so far. I think I've sorted out the jumping cursor, and I've made sure the keyboard's set to UK English but I'm still having the same problems with the symbols-is there anything further I can do?

    \steps for the keyboard (if ur OS is XP)

    Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Under Regional Options tab set English (United Kingdom) in the drop down menu, and click apply.
    Then select Languages tab and click on Details ensure that English (United Kingdom) is there and under keyboard English (United Kingdom) is highlighted and click apply if necessary, and then ok. You may need to reboot for the changes to stick, I can't remember.
    Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!
