Lithofin Stain Stop W (the W being the water based version....don't choose Stain Stop MN - it's cellulose based)

It's absolutely clear, won't colour the fireplace (of course it will darken when applied but will dry back to it's original colour).
  • Hi there,

I hope the following is useful to anyone out there..

I had a lady come to see me this morning, because she had damaged the limestone fireplace I sold her 2 weeks ago, by leaving a hot coffee mug on the mantel.. duh...

Anyway, keeping it brief, I compiled a list of don't do's for her, for the future, that I thought might help others...
    • Never use wax or spray polishes on a limestone fireplace, as these products can darken the surface of the limestone and create patches.
    • Never use kitchen or bathroom cleaners, as they could react with the limestone surface.
    • Never allow cigarettes to be placed on the stone surface, the heat could cause a brown scar.
    • Never stand vases with flowers directly on the limestone surface, as this could cause a permanent ring mark!
    • Never stand red wine, tea or coffee etc, directly on your limestone fireplace -stains and ring marks could result!
    • Never stand coal or logs directly on the fireplace surface - damage and stains may result!
    • Never plaster on to or down to a limestone fireplace - the stone will take up colour from the plaster.
The best way to clean off a grubby mark from limestone fireplaces is simply to use a clean cotton cloth dampened with very dilute washing up liquid. Do not soak the stone though and try to do the cleaning as soon as you notice the accident (hopefully immediately) - if you do spill coffee or wine onto the stone surface don’t panic, just clean it off thoroughly with a dampened cloth and everything should be fine...

If you want any more advice, then chuck me over an email and I will do my best!

    Buck ;)

Hi Buck, I am a new member to the forum and not too good on technology so hope this message reaches you. Recently had installed limestone fireplace. went to clean brass fire with brasso (manual said to use polish) inadvertently rested some of the wadding on the limestone which has now absorbed some of polish . cleaned immediately with diluted washing up liquid and water but not much luck.

Any advice or recommendations really appreciated.

    regards

    Monica
  • Oh dear. Red wine has got splilt on our stone fireplace and has stained to a grey colour. I did clear it up with water and fairy liquid, but obviously some has sunk in!

Can anybody help me out here? Can we get it out, or is it (gulp) a new fireplace?

    Thank you very much!

    Chris
  • Dear Buck please can I ask you a question. We had a lovely Limestone fireplace installed earlier this year which we promptly sealed. We have lit the fire for the first time & a hot coal has accidently fallen onto the limestone. Will I be able to get this out ? has it only marked the sealant rather than the Limestone. I am heartbroken at this time

Hi, we have just boughta flat with a cotley Minster fireplace. Personally I really don't like it, its a victorian flat and looks wrong and really don't like the colour. I tried cleaning it to see if the yuk brown is actually part dirt. The minster website suggests warm water with bleach and a wire brush.to no avail!!

I wonder if it is worth contacting a reclamation yard and selling it..not sure if its worth enough to pay for a new one to be fitted? I was tempted to paint it but heard thats bad with limestone

    Hi

I have a limestone fireplace and candle wax has dripped from the top mantelpiece down on to the hearth.
I've tried using an iron and brown paper also kitchen roll but to no avail.
Any ideas please would be much appreciated.

    Thanks
  • We've got candle wax on an unpolished limestone fireplace - done the brown paper and iron trick - it's got some out but going to have to give this stuff a go -

  • Hi Buck,

Hope you can help...I left 2 pumkins on what I think is a limstone mantle piece a few Holloweens ago and they left a nasty corroded stain. Is there anything I can do without having to replace it?? Planning on moving house I feel terrible that I did such damage to something I don't own...
I've tried everything to clean the orangey stain but there's still a hue of orange there and I tried sanding the damaged surface with soft sandpaper but had no luck. Is there some sort of filler I can get to repair the damage - I can send you a photo so you can assess the damage.

    I'd really appreciate your help.

    Many thanks,

    Jennie
