The medicals are designed to guage not what you CAN'T do but what you CAN do. even if you pass you will still need to attend an interview at the jobcentre and may then be refeered to other organisation for assistance into finding some work. fail to attend these appointments and benefit may be sanctioned. too many people are fit for work but abuse the system it then makes it unfair to those who are genuinely ill. please don't think i am calling you a fraud, be honest and upfront is the only advise I can give you mental heath issues are very hard to decide upon.

Well, got there today and they couldn't find OH's file. So we carried on and sat in the waiting room for the Dr, who came a few mins later... Took us into his office who asked what the problem was as he too couldnt fine OH's file.

He asked a few questions, OH gave him the answers. We were in there ten mins. OH came out even more fed up cos they had to leave the house for ten sodding minute interview...

My IB medical a couple of years ago lasted 2 minutes, he looked at the form, said I was entitled based on the info given due to a bowel condition, commented that the evidence from my consultants supported this (one liver and one bowel specialist) asked a couple of questions to clarify what was on there and asked why I was there. My response was 'Isn't that up to you to decide?'. He said there was no point continuing with the medical because I qualified on that criteria only and it would only cause more pain with my back injury for no reason. Nice guy, honest and very understanding.
One day I might be more organised...........

I went for a medical last february and found out in may that i was unfit for work, 4 weeks ago i got another ib50 form to fill in and i posted it back, i haven't heard anything back so i phoned dwp they said they got it 10/03/08 and woman advised i would either get phone call to go for medical or a letter saying that i would not need to attend a medical. Does anyone know how long they take to work out what the outcome is either way? I suffer from mental health problems and i have been on 4 medicals in the past but last year it was fairly quick they phoned on a sunday morning at 9am to arrange the medical and it was only about 2 weeks after i sent the form back.
  • the guy who interviewed me said the thing was supposed to last 45 mins but after 15 of me crying and panicing he went to check with his superior and said he could end the review early.

i didn't know they did home visits, but if they came to my home they wouldn't have seen a completely different person, as like the OP's OH its going out that causes me problems.

i hope they listened to what your OH's answers.

When I had my first medical in early 2006 I was very scared. I suffer with mental health problems and had to have my project worker come with me. I passed thankfully but the stress of getting there and the stress of the interview really put me on edge.

My mental health problems have since worsened and I was asked to go for a medical a few months back but due to my agoraphobia couldn't. I also have a phone phobia so couldn't phone them up. Luckily someone took me to the doctor (after a lot of attempts of trying to get me out of the house.lol.) and the doctor was so understanding. She wrote a letter supporting my reasons for not being able to attend the medical and I received a letter a few days ago stating that I did not need to go for a mecical at this time. It said I may need to in the future with further claims but right now I do not need to. A weight has certainly been lifted. It didn't tell me whether I had enough points though. It just said I didn't need to go for a medical so I'm still waiting for a letter to confirm whether I have enough points or not but my doctor said she is willing to support an appeal if I am deemed capable of work when she and I clearly both know that I'm not.
I'm getting help now though so when I get better I will be off benefits and out there in the world doing what I love. :)

My OH'd GP will support us if we need any kind of appeal or backup.
It's just all the stress it caused getting OH ready for it all.

Just have to wait and see what comes of it... Hope they have found the file now...!

Sorry OP to go a little off track, just wanted to say "congratulations" to Lady Morticia for not having to go to a Medical, I'm pretty sure that means you have enough points without having to "prove" anything to anyone. Well done and hope all is well with you LM.

    Thank you.

Really? You have no idea what a relief that is. I get stressed easily but my GP is so supportive so I think the letter she sent must have worked in my favour as she knows more about my health than anyone.

I'm taking each day as it comes at the moment but this is certainly a weight off of my mind. Thanks. ****hugs****
