Wireless internet on the laptop.

We've got a wireless modem from tiscali and a wireless adaptor (buffalo) but my oh cant seem to install it? He's done everything it said to do but still no internet on the laptop? My oh says we might have to install the cd on the pc but i dont get why, whats the pc got to do with installing the internet on the laptop? Any idea why its not working?
p.s yes i do not have a clue about computers and simple terms would be helpful:o

Have you intalled the drivers for the wireless adaptor? These can be installed from a cd you should have received with the adaptor. Install these before you plug in the adaptor, then when you plug it in, there should be a small icon near the clock at the bottom. Then you need the SSID (network name) and password.

What operating system do you have, how far aong the connection process do you get? is it a wireless modem or a router?
