Hi, I am afraid I dont understand anything involvingthe charges in my bill. For the last 18 months, we have been on at NPower, saying to them that their charges for gas simply cannot be right for what we were using, to the extent that we try not to use the heating and use an open grate in the lounge for the main source of heat. NPower said that we were using an average of £120 a month in gas! In a 2 bed terrace. Now ok we dont have double glazing and the house is very draughty, but the boiler isn't actaully on for long enough to burn that much gas! We have been giving regular meter readings for both gas and electric, and meter readers have been round to the house too. when I called NPower today to query why my gas bill was:

£269.40 for the period 16/03/07 - 15/01/2008!

they have told me, that my bills/statements I have been getting, have been estimates, despite the regular meter reads. They said that the 3 previous statements I have had, have been cancelled and recalculated, and that this new statement is now up to date and accurate. No explaination as to why they have been overbilling me, or why my protests at the ridiculous gas bills have now proved to be correct.

The electricity is £186.53 for the period 04/10/07 to 14/03/08 which I think is quite reasonable.

We have been paying £90 a month DD to NPower for the combined gas and electric, and the statement says we are £488.41 debit, the gas balance is £301.88, so I assume the extra is a carry over from the previous billing period.

My question is, how do I know if this statement is accurate, and how do I know if I have been overcharged for the last 18 months?

Im sorry if this a bit of a waffle, I just dont understand the bills, and NPower are just inept when you speak to them. I would change suppliers if I knew it would save me money.

CC limits £26000

Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.

You post is not easy to understand with the detail you have posted.

If you post as much detail as you can from your bills on here someone can help you.

Meter readings/dates - estimated or not

    kWh and prices etc etc
  • Hi,
I also have my gas and electricity with npower and I am unable to check my bills as I cannot work out how they calculate their prices. The one I have the most trouble with is the gas. Does anybody know how to calculate the gas using the information given on the bill.

    Yes!

Post details here and someone will explain.

The main difference between NPower and other Utility customers is that NPower charge for more Primary Units in the winter.

Essentially you take the number of gas units you have used and these are converted to kWhs. Depending on your gas meter 1 unit = approx 11.2kWh or 31kWh.

You then pay for xxxkWh at the primary unit rate and the remainder at the secondary unit rate. You then add VAT @5%.

Check if the readings on the bill now are lower than the estimates. If they are lower than all of them, they have backed out the last few bills and replaced it this way.

Bit difficult to say otherwise as there is not enough info to go on. You could write to them which normally means a more sensible response since you won't get the call centre bods.
