I have a steamer I've only used once (hangs head in shame :o). Can someone tell me how steam rice please. champys suggests parboiling it first. Being a natuarlly lazy mare  do I need to do this or can I get away with putting it straight into the steamer basket? And how long do I need to cook it for please.

    TIA :)

I've never bothered doing rice in my steamer because I had a microwave rice steamer (which was great!). I use my steamer a lot and am on my 2nd. It's about to die too so need to get a new one. I use it for all veggies and love doing haggis in it. Very easy to make sure stuff isn't boiled to death and you just shove it in, turn it on and walk away!

Penny - I boil the rice for 3 or 4 minutes before draining and steaming. If it is brown rice, I do it longer - maybe 10 minutes. I don't think you can get away with putting the dry rice straight into the steamer basket.... but I have never tried it!

The booklet for my steamer tells you to rinse the rice in cold water, put it in the rice dish then add boiling water to the dish (double the volume of water to the amount of dry rice). You then steam it for 15-20 mins. It works quite well but I find the amount of rice that fits in the bowl won't feed a family of 5, so I only do mine this way if I need 2 or 3 portions.
  • im going to use mine now! its in the corner so you forget about it!!

The timings in my book (it's a tefal- a few yrs old) are completely random. I never steam ANY veg for more than 15 mins, and yet the timings they give are way longer! If it beeps and the veg is still a bit crunchy, another 5 mins does the trick! But then I quite like it crunchy. My inlaws would probably want to steam all veg for AT LEAST 30 mins to get it soggy enough for them...

I really struggle to get rice right. This thread might have convinced me to get a steamer when I move out! I'd be interested in any sites you find emmy05  Are the Tefal ones best?

I use mine for veg including mushrooms. Have never cooked meat in it but only salmon.

My salmon recipe - cut out large square of tinfoil. put salmon on top, spread on thick layer philadelphia sprinkle on parsley salt and pepper. wrap up by folding all corners together and put in top basket. yummy.
