Parasene Heater

I have got my new greenhouse up and running, and have been given a parasene heater with no instructions. I have googled and asked friends with no luck so can anyone here tell me how to use it please? :)

I know you should trim the wick and try for a blue flame, I presume the more wick showing the hotter it burns ?

I have managed to get it alight it is the standard old fashioned model and has 2 wicks and that T shaped chimney.

Do I need to retract the wick so it is inside the dome shape thing or should it be sticking out of the top ? Do I need to trim it everyday, does this mean just removing the burnt bits ? Should I have both burning all night or just one if I want to make it frost free and not warm ?

I bought a 4 litre can and have only half filled it for now incase it went bang :) paraffin was a joke to get hold of in Bromley. Are these heaters safe , I have heard they can cover greenhouses in soot, how do I prevent that ? At the moment it is outside heating the garden , it is smoking a little but not much. :o

Any info would be appreciated.

I have bought a min/max thermometer as recommended to me in another post and they are not the easiest things to work out without directions :) my min temp so far is 5c but a cold spell is forcast for Easter.

Thanks everyone

Edit: I have put it inside the greenhouse for ten minutes and its very smelly in there ? Is this normal ? Will the fumes damage my little seedlings ?
