I have worked as a credit manager since 1989 so know how the work and wouldn't expect anything else if he was in the wrong, however if they don't put into action the DD's and collect the money then they are in the wrong in harassing him.

Yes but your Dad and therefore emotions are high. Have you proof that they recieved the letter. Why not fax it to the bank via another branch therefore illiminating misunderstandings. I know rbs and lloyds will do this. Try and be objective and put your credit managers hat on - how many times have you played the game to get more out of the deal, and if someone hadn't paid for 5 months what would your reaction be - could have paid in at any branch therefore no excuses (playing a bit of devils advocate so I hope you understand what i'm trying to say)

I think if nothing happens with his threats then we will insist on a SO and stick his side of the bargain.

I'd stick to a SO regardless... that mean HE remains in control and he doesn't end up with the problems MANY people here have had that they increase the amount without his kowledge. Once it's set up there is nothing stopping them changing the amount from say £15 to £100... With a standing order they can't do this as your son retains control.
Until such a time as you manage to pay by SO or DD (if you prefer...) then get your son wo send them cheques by recorded post - this is to protect him not for their benefit. If it goes to court later then he can prove he's done EVERYTHING in his power to try and pay them the agreed monthly amount.
