Can you recommend a starting point

Hi I am looking for some expert advise and thought this the best place to come to. ;)

My hubby is a house husband (as we decided on role reversal 7 years ago) and I go out to work. He has not really got a credit history apart form Virgin Mobile last year and now O2 mobile. I have quite a good credit history and have a few credit cards, with him as an additional card holder.

He is wanting to get a card in his own name as whenever it is birthday or christmas etc the statements go to me and therefore I always know what he has spent on me (this really bothers him as I can get his prezzies with him non the wiser) he only wants a small credit limit, but the freedom to spend now and again without me knowing the cost of every item.

Obviously I have not had a problem obtaining credit.. but he does not really have a credit history, apart from our joint account (that I was the 1st named holder too)

We did try American express recently as they stated joint income and not indivudal income but he was still refused (though we did meet the requirements)

Can anyone advise a credit card that might accept him (obviously he gets the child benefit in his name and the tax credit)

Any advice is greatly recieved.

  • I believe the Capital One (standard card) is always a good port of call.

May MSEers have used it as a way of improving their credit history.

In our household my wife is the additional card holder and so I always know where she has bought me presents for my birthday / christmas. It can be an advantage to me as I can ask her to take them back before the celebration date if I'm not happy with them!

Suffice to say that my approach doesn't always go down too well...

Debit card from a separate bank account might be easier than a credit card - he can get the child benefit and tax credits paid into it.

This is what a relative has done and it works for them.

Apply for an A&L Premier Direct account through Quidco and you get £ 50 cashback too :)

Another quick question to add to this.

Would Vanquis be another option. Are they easier to get (due to the higher interest rate)?

If you think he may get refused for a Capital 1 card?

Apply for this in your name with him as joint card holder. Tick the box for paperless, i.e. no statement. He can view statements on line and set up direct debit for minimum or balance to be paid in full.

    Hi.

    Thought you'd appreciate an update.

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice... He has applied for a Capital One card and got instantly accepted online :D

He has the pin number and is now awaiting the card.

    Once again thanks.
