  • If an employer is that inflexible, do you really want to work for them?

Yupp. I can appreciate they have a policy and they stick to it.

Thanks everyone for taking the trouble to reply.

This probably isn't inflexibility - it might be an assessment centre or they have a systematic interview procedure ie peer interviews, group interviews etc and this can't be reorganised. Rather than write them off, this sounds like a sound company with a carefully considered selection process, a sign of a good and caring employer.

I think it's a really good idea to write to the company, re state your interest in the position, explain this is a family holiday that has been planned for some time, and after careful consideration you regret you can't attend. You do hope they will keep you in mind if any future position was to arise.

Good luck and enjoy your holiday

We are a small charity, and we would struggle to offer an alternative interview date as our panel includes at least one volunteer from our Management Team, and often another volunteer who's a service user.

What we would probably do is say "We'll be in touch if we don't appoint at our first batch of interviews".

While we may not be very flexible at that stage, we're a great organisation to work for.

    Flights are cheap.

Last year, my (first in 5 years) holiday overseas that couldn't be rescheduled clashed with the night I was going to see Prince at the O2 (a lifetime dream come true) with my brother for his birthday. I tried every which way to consolidate the two, in the end I flew back for one night. It cost me about £100 or so. It was tricky to arrange, and at the time I didn't have much disposable cash around but it was worth every penny.

Depends how important it is I guess.

  • It may be a bit far fetched but if it is just a standard interview could it possible be done over the telepohone with the interviewer on that day. may cost a bomb but may be worth it!
One day, I AM going to be out of debt. I'm just not sure when.

Is the interview date towards the start of your holiday or slap bang in the middle? If it's on one of the first few days, it might be possible for you to fly out later and join your family for the rest of the holiday? (Although if you are buying a one way ticket, check that the return part of your original ticket does not get cancelled for a no show on the way out.)

Really unfortunate timing. If nothing can be done, don't take it to heart. If you made it this far with this company, you've clearly got enough potential to land a similar job with a different employer... You know you're capable, so enjoy your holiday and start afresh when you come back, all relaxed and ready for anything. :)

The original interview will have been more than 3 weeks ago. I wonder whether the OP attended or whether it was deferred.
