On holiday when job interview is being held

I've applied for a job and have just heard back that I've been selected to sit the pre interview test. Excellent news....here comes the but. If succesful the interviews are being held the following week but I'm out of the country on holiday.
You have to be available both days and I'm not.
I'm gutted. They don't advertise their jobs very often and I am so upset that I'm gonna miss out on the chance.
Any words of comfort for me please. Any suggestions?

As I see it, you have three choices:
1. Ask the company nicely, explain the situation and see if they will offer you an alternative date. (You may get a clue as to how eager they are to see you depending upon if they agree or not)
2. Cancel or amend your holiday
3. Carry on job hunting

Definitely ask the Company if there are any alternatives, that you could be interviewed before or after your holiday, tell them you are really keen to be considered for the post. I know where I work that we have interviewed candidates prior to the interview date as they were unavailable on the date suggested. They are then considered along with the applicants who attend on the day, hope this helps and best of luck. And I have done reading & geography.. too !

Any reasonable company shouldn't see a problem with this as long as you give them notice. This exact scenario happened to me a few years ago and I was interviewed approx 2 weeks after everyone else -and got the job! If they really are inflexible then personally I wouldn't wanna work for them anyway.

It's worth asking but don't be disappointed or feel rejected if they say no. Many companies use a whole assessment day format and so cannot offer any flexibility in terms of interview because of the logistics involved.0

Thanks for your replies.
I called them but as they said in their letter they are unable to make alternative arrangements. Hey ho, that's life.
I'm going to write to them, just to put in writing the circumstances, at least I know I've done all I can then.

If the job means a lot to you, could you consider changing your holiday, or have you already told the company you're not going to attend? In the overall scheme of things isn't being happy at work more important than a holiday? It might demonstrate real enthusiasm to them if you gave up/delayed your holiday? Horrible thought I know, but worth considering0

last year, my wife was in a similar situation, the interview day was whilst we where in spain on holiday, so she said ok, never mind.
on our return, they contacted her and invited her for an interview, she went and was offered the job..............
so in the end, the job was meant for her, sometimes life works out that waysmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

Being happy in my job is important but cancelling the holiday isnt really feasible. Holidays dont come our way that often and my family deserves the break.
The holiday has been planned for 3 months, it's a bit late in the day to be able to change things with 10 days to go.
Thanks for your comments

If an employer is that inflexible, do you really want to work for them?Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0
