Credit Card Fraud Attempt

My card provider, security divsion, rang me 2 weeks ago and reported some attempted use on my card, explaining this was often a prelude to a serious fraud attempt if successful. I confirmed that I had not authorised the payment. The card was suspended and a new card sent out, my details transferred to the new card. All went well and new card arrived. Yesterday my wife was shaken to recieve an anonomouse call from a foreign sounding chap saying his card had been ripped off and mine was about to be, and my wife should cantact me immediately. He was ringing because he did not want us to suffer as he had. He reeled off our address, and obviously had the telephone number and the suspended credit card number. Obviously the attempt would be unsuccessful due to the suspension but I cannot fathom why he rang it seems very suspicious, if he had been ripped off how had he our details? I assume he was one of the fraudsters but why ring to warn us? I have requested my credit reference files today to see if any ID fraud is happening, otherwise I am baffled, has anyone any ideas what is happening, or had an event like this? Is there anything else I should do?

All suggestions welcomed

Regards ATCO1

That sounds very strange..I would call the bank back...it may well have been one of their staff.

Did the guy on the phone say the card was "suspended". He may have been a fraudster trying to "fish" for further info. Be very careful if you get any further calls in the next few weeks. Your wife may have inadvertently confirmed your name and address to the guy, and they sometimes call a few times trying to gather further bits of info. Bit by bit they build up info to rob ids. Mind you may well have been a bank employee so worth checking with them just to see.
    Good luck

Phone your bank and report a phishing phone call.

    Sounds suspect to me.

I very much doubt an employee of the bank is going to make unsolicited phone calls telling people that his card had been ripped off and thier's was about to be, and my wife should contact me immediately. He was ringing because he did not want us to suffer as he had.

Does that honestly sound like the sort of call you would get from a bank employee? Wise up people & think about what you are suggesting - it's obviously someone phishing for info. The bank is hardly going to phone people up to tell them thier card is about to be ripped off.

I think the posters are suggesting that a Bank Employee is actually the fraudster, it doesn't make sense though as they would have access to all the information they need on the banks computer systems.

Very suspicious call, if they call again do NOT give them anything, I am sure that this is a fraudster phishing for information.
