ages back I purchased some share through Barclays Share Dealing, I have since lost all the paperwork relating to these. How do I get either a new share certificate or something to show how many shares I have etc?

You can go back to Barclays and them. I'm sure they'd keep a record of all their transactions on file, although if it was a very long time ago if would probably take a while for someone to trawl through their archive. Alternatively just phone the registrar of the companies you bought shares in (the registrar is the company in charge of maintaining the list of shareholders) and ask them for a copy of your share certificate. There will be a hefty charge for this (around £40 per certificate) and I doubt it's something you'll be able to get out of, as you need the cert to sell the shares.0
