Schools PTA (a registered charity) are collecting mobile phones as a fundraiser using a company who give very £1.50 per handset to school and a gift to the child collecting the phone. Phones can be broken or have bits missing.

Problem is the rewards also change over time. A child donated 40 broken archaic handsets and selected a gift from an old leaflet (not the one sent out by school 6 weeks ago). Checking through prior to sending the phones off this was noticed and the child informed that the item was no longer available and asked to choose a new reward. Parent of child has decided that none of the new items are suitable and has requested that her phones are given back because she can get more money for herself by cashing them in on-line. Obviously to keep things amicable between school and the parents this was done without question.

Firstly I'm fuming. How can anyone be that selfish that they can ask for a donation back? Secondly its taken her 3 weeks to reach that conclusion, the children waiting for their rewards will now have an extended wait (easter Hols) whilst we find 38 more phones to send off (they have to be sent in batches of 50+ to qualify for free collection).

Sorry for the rant!

Yep....that parent is being pretty selfish. It was unfortunate that a wrong leaflet was given out in the first place of "rewards" - as the situation would not have arisen if that hadnt happened. Having said that - the parent concerned should have just gritted their teeth and resigned themselves to not getting the gift chosen and left the phones with you.

They're obviously bringing their child up well - not!

Ah, but I read this to mean that leaflets were sent out on a regular basis, and parents used an old one to pick out a gift rather than the current one. Could happen in our house too ... but I'd just make the child choose something from the new leaflet, or go without.
