My AVG Found a Trojan - What Do I Do

When my pc was booting up today I got 4 separate messages saying Virus Detected. This is the first time this has happened. I have AVG Free edition so each time I sent it to the volt so now I have 4 viruses in there. I have scanned again and theres nothing now. My question is what do I do with the virusesnow they are in the vault. Do I keep them there or If I empty the vault will the viruses go back onto my system. Please don't laugh if this all sounds daft but Im really not tech minded. The viruses are all the same they are
Trojan Horse 1stbar.BY (or it might by Istbar) - its not really very clear. Does anyone know what it is?

A Google picked this up http://www.europe.f-secure.com/v-descs/istbar.shtml

If AVG has removed of it (in the vault) you don't need to do anything. These things can have a habit of re-appearing as they hide in your sytem files. If this happens you would need to turn off system restore and re-scan but as AVG has come back clear it sounds like you have got rid.

Do you have anti-spyware programs? Has this just got through your defences, it happens.

  • Thanks for that. I kept getting the virus when I was trying to access a site where you could download song lyrics - dont know if its a coincidence or what but feel better that is not a virus as such. Also you said do a system restore - dont know how to do that and I dont have any discs - so am guessing would not be able to do it then.

worse case if you keep finding them you can do a dos run of AVG from either your rescue disk (if you did it) or direct from a bootable disk....it takes a while but will sort it out !!

if I remember rightly then you have win98 ??

From an earlier post of yours I remember, don't you run Windows 98? If that's still the case then there is no system restore so this shouldn't be a problem for you.

Edit: Browntoa has already said this :o

  • Yes I do run Win98 - aren't you switched on. I dont have a rescue disk as my PC came from a friend who was getting rid of it so basically all I have is whats installed on it with no backup discs etc.

Now the trojans are in my virus vault - I have an option to empty the vault - can I do that now safely:confused:
  • Yes you can do that safely. Have you restarted your computer and checked it boots up fine and run avg again to check there are no viruses. Once a virus is in the vault it is isolated from the rest of the Operating System so therefore safe to delete.
  • Thanks Dark Force!
  • No problem. Anytime! Just make sure that you scan for viruses regularly and avoid that website for lyrics.

if you look "Test Centre" in AVG there is an option for making a rescue disk , it's designed for if a virus stops your pc booting up....wont fix windows problems but allows you to scan the pc from the disk
