It depends if it is just a striaght swap. For example, changing from a conventional to a combi boiler would be more involved. The tank in the roof, hot water cylinder, pump and diverting valve would need to be removed as they are not needed.
Also all new boilers installed after 1st April must be of the condensing type.
Enure that the installer is CORGI registered. Under the gas regs which is law all gas appliances must be installed by a CORGI registered installer. Check the CORGI website for more details http://www.corgi-gas-safety.com/
Getting back to the point, £400 doesn't sound that extortionate. Considering these guys can charge £50 an hour plus call out fees and parts. It soon adds up. I would get a few more quotes to be sure.
Be carefull when choosing heating engineers from the Yellow Pages though, its a lottery to which are good and which are cowboys. I try to use recommended installers from friends/family.0 -
That's cheap - I was quoted £1300 for replacing a combi with a new combi, with me supplying the new boiler! In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
It's time to make that change.

My dad just had a new boiler re-fitted. He supplied the boiler, but it cost about £1000 to fit it!
I thought this was expensive, but his friend owns the company and had knocked off £500!:starmod: :staradmin :starmod:I gave up jogging for my health when my thighs kept rubbing together and setting fire to my knickers:starmod: :staradmin :starmod:0 -
WOW well no its a straight swap hubby has checked and all the fitting is the same!
It is a combi boiler and we know the regs about the condensers but have had feedback that they dont last very long....so needed 1 that would last a while we couldnt afford the boiler never mind the fitting so dont know what we will do!
Thanx for the replies

were in the processof changing boilers. we have been told thst you can not have a combi installed from april and can only have a condensing. also we have quoted 1500 to disconnect exisiting system, supply and fit condenser etc.
but our plumber(not given him the job yet) says that we will have to pay for an electrician to connect the boiler. we think he is trying it on. does anyone in the know if he is telling the truth?0 -
Our boiler had to be connected by electrician. Plumber got on with other things while we waited for electrician to arrive. It's all rules and regs these days.Herman - MP for all!0

Im in the middle of 'negotiating' a price to do mine, approx £300 to do a straight swap (combi for combi in same place), apparently this is cheap for my area (Herts/Essex borders). Apparently now you have to fit condensing boilers, which cost 50% more to buy (roughly) but are much more efficient. Prob get a Corgi man to fit a std combi still but my fitter said its a bit of a gray area TBH, could backfire on you in a few years time. Theres a couple of posts I started in the DIY section about boilers have a quick read and good luck

If you booked the job beforer April (And of course, you did, didn't you) you can get away with a combi. an obliging fitter will explain.
also there are exceptions where a combi can be fitted AFTER April.
Once again, Ask a corgi Reg'd plumber!

Corgi registration, insurance and ongoing training is very expensive and obligatory.
Once a brain surgeon qualifies ,thats it hes qualified unless he kills someone and is struck off .(half the time theyll cover that up aswell!) Not so in the Gas Industry, ongoing training costs and exams, inspections etc mean many heating engs and plumbers aren't renewing their licences. Those that are left are becoming quite exclusive and can (an should) charge accordingly.
If you can get this done for £500 take it0 -
hi people, sorry to butt in a thread but this might be of interest to Sarah...
Just been quoted £2150 to supply and fit Worcester Bosch Greenstar 28i condensing combi boiler and re-position it up stairs in the bathroom (directly above existing location in kitchen. Ceiling is already down BTW.
Does this seem reasonable to you?
Many thanks in advance
