NIP for going through red lights in a car i no longer own
Just received a letter containing a notice of intended prosecution. It is for going through a red traffic light. They have the evidence on camera. The incident happened in a place i never visited. It happened in mid November last year. The letter is dated yesterday. What winds me up is that i sold the car in mid october last year. Also the letter has my first two names correct and wrong surname.
What steps shall i take? I know the date i sold the car and had received a letter from DVLA confirming change of ownership. I do not have the buyer's details now.
I feel like just ticking the box in part 2 which says i am not the owner.
Thanks for any advice given.

I would write a letter back to them, enclosing a photocopy of the letter from dvla confirming change of ownership, explaining the date you sold the car and let them check up with dvla to find the correct owner of the vehicle, we had a problem a couple of years ago after selling a car, kept having unpaid parking ticket fines, they added up to almost a £1000!!!! my dh contacted the council concerned and they wrote to us apologising and even gave us the name & address of the new keeper, good luck!A freebie a day sends a smile my way!

Thanks for the reply.
A couple of things which i find confusing.
1. If the police got my details from DVLA why did they not get the new keeper's details. The incident happened over a month after i sold the car. Before the incident i got a letter from DVLA stating they have updated their records.
2. If the police got my details from DVLA how come they have missed out my first name, got my second name correct and got my surname wrong, and
3. According to this website http://www.askthe.police.uk/Content/Q557.htm it says that NIP must be served within 14 days of the offence. I got the letter 4 months after.
Any info given above will be greatly appreciated.Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problemsWell at least i learn something on the way

did you sell the car to a motor trader? If so then when you send the yellow slip (V5C/3) to DVLA then that removes your details but does not update the trader as a "keeper" because traders do not go on registration certificate when vehicle is in trade. The vehicle record would just shows "disposal to motor trade" as current keeper. The police/councils etc tend then to write out to the last known keeper - ie you - but they should be asking who you sold it on to.
If you want further confirmation from DVLA stating the date of disposal (as the letter you have does not state the date) then write or fax to:
BC1
DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1ZA
Fax - 01792 783083
You will then get a letter back confirming date of disposal and a copy of the log book that you filled out. Keep the original letter and send copy to police.

The vehicle may have been registered in your name but at a different address. I guess that the owner still wanted to use your name to scam the DVLA and Police but mis-spelt your details.
My dad P/Ex'ed his car to a dealer in October and the dealer said that the car was to be sold at auction. Whoever bought the car at auction obviously decided to register the vehicle in my dads name but to a London address. Then the guy proceeded to drive around London and not pay the Congestion Charge. Congestion Charge London must have cross referenced my dads name with his correct address and he received about 30 fines! We supplied them with the sales invoice and the DVLA letters and CCLondon sent us a letter confirming that they would take no action against us.The man without a signature.0 -
When I got rid of my last car I was advised to photocopy the complete signed log book before giving it to the dealer. This way you have a record of where the car has gone to, should the dealer/next purchaser turn out to be less than honest and something like this happens.0
